Librarian + Drill Sargeant = Art Director

Those are my folks up there. Barbara Ferrel Dryer and Mark Steven Dryer. They look good together right? Except for the fact that those pictures were taken about twenty years apart. Before my mom married my father, her name was Barbara Jean. People called her Bobby Jean. I guess that’s what happens when you’re born and raised in Norfolk, Va. That is the prettiest picture of my mother I could find. It must have been her senior college picture or something like that. My mom is also one of the most intelligent people you will ever meet. She will rock you in Jeopardy. She is so smart because she reads more than any human being. She has been a librarian her entire life. When she isn’t dropping knowledge on the kids she is a damn fine seamstress. She made my sister’s wedding dress by hand in three weeks.

Mark Steven Dryer was born on April 18, 1948 at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.
My Grandfather went to the Naval Academy with Jimmy Carter in the famous class of 1948.
As tough and stern as he may appear my dad is a really friendly and witty guy. Extremely witty in fact. He could be a copywriter. He will rarely say anything unless it is well thought out or insightful.
I think this must be how my parents met. He must have said something in British Lit 210 that made my mom’s brain smile. My parents taught me to look at things differently. To be different. To always have a deep hunger for the unknown. Most importantly they taught me about how to fail hard and how to recover. Somehow, by the grace of God, these two upstanding Americans created an art director. I really don’t think they were planning on that. Oh well.

Things I've been into lately

The internet, handwritten letters, Tim Duncan, spiral glazed hams, deviled eggs, sanddollars, geraniums, intérnet, salt-treated lumber, zebra cakes, the first 3 episodes of Welcome Back Kotter, long sleeve t-shirts, pellet ice, the country of Qatar, and the internet
